Stage Story

Jerome doesn’t let you leave easily. You have to break free.

The town clings to the mountainside like a stubborn memory – brick, timber and rusted iron from a mining age that refuses to die. They say it’s one of the most haunted towns in the West. And on the morning of Stage 1, you’ll feel those haunted eyes on your back as you roll out of the steep streets into the high desert.

The day is all about exposed ridgelines, dust that sticks to your teeth, and climbs that don’t care it’s only the start of the campaign. The wind will steal your breath, the sun will steal your shadow, and the road will give you nothing for free.

Somewhere between the grind out of Jerome and the smooth rail trails into Watson Lake, you’ll understand why this stage is called GRIT. It’s your enlistment. The proof that you belong in the ranks of the Rough Riders.

Route Breakdown

Ghost Town Departure

Historic Jerome sets the stage – weathered brick, old mining buildings, steep streets, and a drop into the unknown. You’ll climb County Road 72 / FSR 318 out of town, immediately immersed in the world of high-desert gravel.

Checkpoint 1 – CR70 Junction (~25 km / 15.5 mi)

After a steady grind through wide-open country, you’ll hit the first aid station. Refuel, reset, and prepare for the mid-stage GRIT fest.

Checkpoint 2 – Peavine North Extension (~54 km / 33.5 mi)

The final checkpoint sits where the wild gives way to rhythm. This marks the start of your journey on the Peavine Trail, a groomed rail-grade path with amazing red rock views of the Dells.

Finish – Watson Lake Touchdown

As you flow along the edge of Watson Lake, you’ll get one of the most scenic views of the region. And then, cheers from the finish line.

That’s Stage 1, and your first earned badge of GRIT.
